ΡΙΖΕΣ : ROOTS | ΑΝΑΜΜΑ exhibition | 10 Years | May 2022

Jun 5, 2022 | Εκθέσεις, Νέα, Όλα τα νέα

It was 10 years ago when I began with ANAMMA Jewelry School… it is so moving to be able to make a dream come true; to be able to share with other people your love for art and jewelry. This project started little by little in October of 2011 and, here we are today, celebrating 10 Years of ANAMMA. A jewelry school that embraces its students in order to introduce them into the art of jewelry, help them take their first steps in the field and delve into the symbolisms of this ancient art that has been lying in our cultural heritage for centuries. I want to express my gratitude for this living cell of people called ANAMMA, as well as to say a Big Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been joining us on the journey of jewelry creation – our Students, our Collaborators and our “invisible” supporters.

I wish inspiring, soulful creations to all! Anastasia Kandaraki – Founder of Anamma

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, ANAMMA Art Jewelry School is organising an exhibition titled “ROOTS”. Students, graduates and instructors of the school are participating in this exhibition, who, in their own unique way, have left their mark and have contributed to the growth of this creative cell, as well as to the dissemination of contemporary jewelry throughout Athens and beyond.

The pandemic proved to be a period of intense retrospection, reconsideration and nostalgia for places, people and habits. At the same time, in an era where everything is changing rapidly, there is a need to save our “roots”.

Our cultural heritage defines who we are and boosts our feeling of “belonging” to a common family. It incorporates all the aspects of the environment accruing from the interaction between people and places throughout time.

The exhibition looks at the notions of identity, memory, place and time. Its starting point is the notion of origin – our roots – in order to explore the essence of cultural and personal identity as this has been shaped and is evolving from generation to generation. Moreover, it examines a relation of child-adult with perceptions and manners rooted in each individual, aiming at their study, evaluation or debunking.

By observing the reference points in common among the various experiences, we are wondering if these can complement, enrich and enhance one another in order to coexist within the framework of an ever evolving individual and collective identity. This way, we are creatively placing tradition in a contemporary context and present new perspectives to safeguard our tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

Within this context, jewelry plays an important role as it is a vehicle carrying memory and meaning. It conveys visions of culture and illustrates ideas for the body in a symbolic way. It is the most direct means that can highlight and project the aspects of one self and identity

So, we are going back to our roots – memories, narrations, memorabilia – to draw inspiration; imaginary stories jumping out of coffee cups, lighthouses turning into reference points in personal quests, relations and family bonds being uncovered, fragments as well as traumas from the past coming to the surface.

The exhibition is set up as an installation focusing on contemporary jewelry and the object, while incorporating other forms of artistic expression: photography, video and writing.
