Meaning & Touch – Material interpretations
3 days workshop with Flora Vagi
April 15-17, 2016
Duration:24 hours
“The artist is a man who finds that the form or shape of things externally corresponds, in some strange way, to the movements of his mental and emotional life.
(Graham Collins)
As makers, we use our hands to put meaning into objects, by touching and transforming the material. Each experience and emotion generating thoughts, goes through our body, straight into the piece we are making.
A series of exercises will be realized, both in group and individually, in order to generate ideas for personal work, experiment with materials, forms and dimensions and communicate ideas through the interpretation of materials. We will focus on finding the right material to convey a thought or concept, or on learning how to make the already chosen material congruent with the ideas we wish to communicate. The goal is to work outside our comfort zone and discover new areas of interest on each one’s creativity map.
Based on their personal and professional experiences, participants are urged to reflect on the following: What is/are the ideal material, shape, dimension, colour and spot on the body / or elsewhere?
To respond to this, we will experiment by involving all senses, so as to interpret each material as widely as possible, without limiting it to it’s physical properties.
All exercises and outcomes will be discussed and reflected upon, so as to directly lead to the next one. Throughout the process, we will also come up with a structure, that can be applied on each participant’s working practice.
