In this workshop, we will have the chance to learn from the ancients, by studying their life during the Archaic period (750 – 480 BC) through the treasures and grave goods that are hosted nowadays in the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum.
This journey from antiquity till today will start with a guided tour by the archaeologist and researcher Eleni Konstantinidi-Syvridi, who will talk to us about the world of the ancients, their habits, rituals and artefacts.
In the first part of the workshop, we will look into ancient techniques and their application and, more specifically, the impressed technique on fine metal sheets. We will discover the manufacturing process of the ancients and the tools they used in order to render raised motifs on metal surfaces.
In the second part, we will focus on the utility of specific grave goods, as well as on their symbolism in antiquity. We will wonder about their relation to the present, the modern means and materials, the human body and the contemporary lifestyle. The goal is to draw inspiration from these treasures and attribute them under a modern perspective, by exploring new paths of expression and creation.
Participants must have a basic knowledge on silversmithing.
