2nd Year | From flat surface to three-dimensional space

Armed with the knowledge we have acquired from the first year of the course, that is the interactions among three-dimensional shapes and more specifically between the cube and the sphere, we move on into the second year of the seminar where we will analyze the forces which shape a three-dimensional form, study its change and experiment with the loads of transformations that are occurring.

We make attempts and observe how the shapes that come up are interacting with the body and intend to understand the meaning of a ring, brooch and bracelet. Finally, we focus more on each category of jewelry separately (ring, brooch, bracelet ) and we examine their relation to the body and the purpose they serve.

The mock-ups and drafts are the tools of experimentation, while wire, tape, metal sheets and silversmithing techniques are the conclusive tools for the realization of the jewelry.

The program will last one year (116 hours) and is split in three consecutive and complementary cycles.

Participants must have a basic knowledge on silversmithing.

Ring : Damianos Tzavaras

1st cycle

40 hours / October, 9 – December, 18 2023

The first cycle builds on the projects of the previous year (both theoretical and technical). Our topic will be the ring, its symbolisms, its relation to the body, proportions and ways of making it. We will elaborate on techniques of three-dimensional composition and material attachment, as well as on matters of functionality.

2nd cycle

40 hours / January, 8 – March, 11 2024

In the second part of the course, we will work on the brooch, a rather misconceived type of jewelry as it is demanding and difficult to make. It illustrates the personality of the person wearing it; it requires knowledge on composition; and it hides secrets, both technical and functional (clasps, material attachment, frames). The three-dimensional structure of the form reveals another relation with the body and piece of clothing

3rd cycle

36 hours / April, 1 – June, 24 2024

In the last section of the course, we will focus on the creation of the jewelry around our wrist: the bracelet. We will make joints and clasps and we will work on techniques of three-dimensional composition which require demanding fastening and welding.

The technical level of this seminar is high and, thus, having familiarized ourselves with several techniques through the projects of the first year, we will keep developing our skills.
It is also suggested for students to practice at their own space.
At the same time, the purpose of this course is for participants to create their own portfolio, which they will keep enriching and that will help them shape their personal style and identity in their work.
