3-day workshop with Estela Saez

October 8-10 2020

Duration: 24 hours

The focus of the workshop is to find inspiration, recognize it, understand it and then apply it in order to create conceptual pieces through several techniques. Students will revisit the process of making jewelry through a well-balanced comprehension of the conscious & unconscious, in an attempt to combine them. Thanks to extensive one-to-one guidance and freedom of self-expression, participants learn to “speak” a unique language of contemporary jewelry design.

With “cosmos” and everyday objects serving as the starting point, we will elaborate on the creative process, through interdisciplinary exercises and models that can be used both in jewellery design and other disciplines. Practical exercises and drawing will help us evolve our personal creative process, while cross-disciplinary thinking and hands-on assignments will allow us to develop a critical eye on making. Space, material and our background will serve as a basis to explore new thinking patterns.

OBJECTIVES
-Break the established personal barriers between object and individual while working.
-Celebrate creativity while performing practical exercises.
-Find a balance between imagination and reasoning.
-Make the most of spontaneity, away from preconceptions.

For the workshop to fulfil its participants’ aspirations, it is of very important that they are willing to challenge themselves through sincere self-critic.

Born in Girona, 1977 (Catalonia, Spain) A Catalan maker and educator. Saez’s oeuvre spans the last twenty five years. Her works include colourful fabric bladders, suspended below or above black metal containers, or fragile prosthetic scaffolds made of cardboard, and although occasionally wearable, her creations pay scant notice to the body: they derive their evocative power from their distance to the ground, not the skin. Yet, while sculptural, her repertoire of shapes continues to be homebound and proportionate to the hand: Saez belongs to a relatively small group of makers whose practice is guided by the dual nature of contemporary jewelry, at once sculptural and wearable. Educated at Massana School in Barcelona, she completed her Master of Arts at The University of Trier, Idar Oberstein, Germany in 2010 and continued to be based in The Netherlands until 2012, developing her own art-projects. For the past fifteen years, Estela Saez has been invited as a guest teacher and lecturer worldwide. She participates and organises jewelry-related events, seminars and cross-disciplinary projects to promote critical thinking in the field. Her Master Thesis “The core & The Shell” [2010] is partially based upon the question of how to connect the insider-jewelry-circles with the outside and the society at large. Saez most recent project took place in post-revolutionary Cairo, Egypt as a director of The Design Studio by Azza Fahmy, from 2013 to 2016. The project was appointed for the UN-Women as an example of how jewelry & design enables self-sufficiency, and how can play an essential role in changing people’s life perspective. Lives in Girona and works internationally.
