Metal Sculpting & Repoussé

An introduction to metallurgy provides the foundation for metal sculpture.

We learn about metals, their properties, the way to use them and their particular characteristics. We explore how from a sheet and a wire of metal, we can create three-dimensional volumes with organic flow and plasticity in form.

By applying the ancient repoussé technique, we give volume and texture to our metal using chasing tools and a hammer in order to create jewelry as well as our own tools!

We discover when a metal sheet splits, when it bends without cracking, and, under which conditions a coiled wire maintains its elasticity.

Nature serves as our inspiration for creative exercises, aiming at initiating students into the art of metal sculpture with the love and fineness that jewelry demands.

This course is addressed to people familiar with basic silversmithing techniques, who wish to discover the plasticity of metal by making metal sculpture forms.

The course’s syllabus will be completed in 3 cycles of 97 hours of classes in total.
There is also the option to attend one cycle.

Tutor: Dimitris Nikolaidis

a’ cycle: Metallurgy and Metal Sculpture

36 hours / October 17, December 19 2026

In the first cycle, we learn to make three-dimensional forms with forged wires and pierced articulated sheet metals.

We then create various types of jewelry, applying the repoussé technique and learn how to place glass mosaic into a metal case.

Duration: 36 hours / October 17th – December 19th 2026
Day: Saturday, 11:00 – 14:30
Number of participants: 6 to 8 individuals
Participation fee: 440 € + VAT 24%
Tutor: Dimitris Nikolaidis

b’ cycle: Compositions / Applications in Metal Sculpture and Repoussé Technique

36 hours / January 16, – March, 27 2027

In the second cycle, we work on the inlay of glass into a hollow metal bead.
We make a bracelet from thick wire with a built-in closure-mechanism.

An articulated – sliding closure from forged wires comes next, while we will elaborate on the repoussé technique with more demanding forms.

We create impressions on soft metals through hammering, using hard wires and stainless-steel mesh. At the same time, we combine gold with silver. The cycle closes with learning how to create our own tools — chasing tools for the repoussé technique.

Workshop Duration: 36 hours /  January 16th – March 27th 2027
Day: Saturday, 11:00 – 14:30
Number of participants: 6 to 8 individuals
Participation fee: 440 € + VAT 24% (36h)
Tutor: Dimitris Nikolaidis

Participants undertake the cost of necessary materials.

c’ cycle: Metal Sculpture and Ancient Metal Forming Technique

25 hours / April, 3 –  June, 26 2027

In the third cycle, we practice cuttlefish bone casting and hammering soft metal into a recessed bronze mold (the method used in the creation of ancient coins).

We then learn mineral and stone grinding. This is followed by metal forming with tongs in molten metal, and the inlay of bone, wood, and metal into wood.

The cycle concludes with the repoussé technique applied to more complex and demanding forms.

Workshop Duration: 25 hours /  April 3rd – June 26th 2027
