Jewelry as a social tool

3-Days workshop with Vivi Touloumidi

February 16-18 2024

Duration: 21 hours

Can jewelry communicate contemporary concerns about the society we are living in, the adversities we are being faced with, as well as our desires for a better world?

Is a wearable item so small and trivial to bring to the forefront ideas of this sort, or, can it become a very effective communication tool as it also experiences the same daily life and circumstances with the body carrying it in public life?

Which are the methodology tools for someone to attribute this dimension to the body? To expose and be exposed through works that pose questions and serve as a spark for discussion and open up new worlds where one can exist in a different way?

During this three-day intensive seminar, we will analyse jewelry from a sociopolitical standpoint, discuss historic examples and modern practices of art research in order to create new work according to the theme selected by each participant in particular. At the same time, we will talk about the role of art work today and make an introduction in theoretical, easily comprehensible texts that will be used as tools for further analysis and creation.
