Daniela Malev – Jewelry Artist & Author
Wednesday, April 13 2022, 19.00-20.30 (GMT/UTC +3)
Daniela Malev is a jeweler, teacher, researcher and author of the best seller “To the Point– Pin mechanisms and brooch back design”.
Trained as a goldsmith in her hometown Dresden, she holds a Master Craftsman Certificate in goldsmithing and silversmithing and has also studied jewelry design at Staatliche Zeichenakademie Hanau, Germany. She concluded her formal studies with a BA and MFA degree in gemstone and jewelry design at the Trier University of Applied Sciences in Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
She is currently researching and investigating the subject of connections in jewelry design, while working on a new book on this topic that will be published in 2022.
Daniela’s lecture explores the subject of connections through the eye of a jeweler, but also provides inspiration for a broader view into the cosmos of connections surrounding us in everyday objects and in a general sense.
A connection serves the purpose of bringing two or more distinct details together as part of a bigger union. In jewelry, several types of connections apply: hot connections like soldering, welding or casting, and cold connections using rivets, screws and nails. Elements can also be glued or stitched together; loops can be connected into each other; connections can be achieved through slots; necklaces can be closed by hook & eye clasps. At the same time, there are contextual or aesthetic connections that apply in the creation of jewelry pieces. Ideas can also be drawn from techniques used in other crafts, such as weaving, smithing or wood carving, or from drawings, paintings, sculptures and architecture.
This lecture is an invitation to consciously look around and discover inspiring ways of connections.
