Handmade Jewelry Seminar

This seminar focuses on the development of silversmithing techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on the properties, processing and shaping of metals, as well as on the most demanding soldering types.

Next follows a series of exercises, driven by the principles of classic metalsmithing. The purpose of this seminar is to allow each student to expand his/her knowledge on the art of handmade jewelry.

It is addressed to students familiar with the basic silversmithing techniques.

The seminar syllabus will be completed in two consecutive cycles of 80 hours in total. Registration is realized in December. There is the option of attending one cycle only.

1st cycle

January 15th – March, 18th  &  May 20th – July 15th 2020/ 40 hours

In the first cycle, we focus on techniques which demand precision and examine alloys and their properties.
Participants learn the technique of setting a cabochon in a bezel, in order to create a ring.
They make decorative textures on the metal via hammering and work with various tools on metal surfaces to create a necklace-locket.
They focus on the soldering of various metals and their shaping in order to create a brooch.
Finally, special attention is given to the finishing and smoothing of jewelry.

2nd cycle

May 20th – July 15th 2020 / 40 hours

In the 2nd cycle, we focus on different ways of connecting elements, using both soldering methods and cold connections.
Participants study in detail the use and attributes of tools, such as drills.
They also discover various kinds of joints (screws, rivets, hinges).
The goal is to use these techniques in order to create a bracelet and a necklace.
