PATINAS : OXIDATIONS
2-day Workshop with Judy McCaig
December 13 & 14 2025
Duration: 14 hours

In this workshop, we will explore various ways of finishing the surfaces of different metals to create diverse effects through colours, shades, textures and patina.
Patination is a technique that involves the application of colour chemically on a metal surface in order to achieve an aging effect on a particular piece. Copper that is exposed to the natural elements, reacts with the oxygen in the atmosphere and, thus, a layer of oxide is formed on its surface, which has a green colour. This outer layer developed by the oxidation of the copper is known as “patina”.
We will work with patinas on copper and copper alloys – brass, nickel silver – while, some formulas can be also applied on silver. At the same time, we will explore ways of colouring, using natural ingredients.
