Handmade Jewelry

This course focuses on learning and developing the basic silversmithing techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on the properties, processing and shaping of metals, as well as on the most demanding soldering methods.

Series of exercises is applied progressively, driven by the principles of classic metalsmithing. The purpose of this course is to allow each student to expand his/her knowledge on the art of handmade jewelry, as well as to get acquainted with measurements, welding and precision in creation.

Tutors: Anastasia Kandaraki and Angelica Komis

The course syllabus will be completed in three consecutive cycles (total duration: 116 hours). Registration for each cycle is realized in September, December and February respectively. There is also the option to attend only one cycle.

1st cycle

36 hours / October, 11 – December, 21 2023

The first cycle serves as an introduction to the basic silversmithing techniques such as: scroll saw cutting, filing, silver soldering, hammering and polishing. The metals we will be using to apply our techniques are brass, copper and silver. We will create our first jewelry collection, which includes a pair of earrings using wire, a three-dimensional ring by applying the “box-style” technique and finally, in order to discover the elasticity of metals, we will make a sphere-shaped pendant.

Day & Time: Wednesday, 11:00 – 15:00 or Thursday 17:00-21:00
Number of participants: 4 to 8 individuals
Participation fee: 400€ + VAT 24%

2nd cycle

40 hours / January, 10 – March, 20 2024

In the second cycle, we build on techniques on metal which demand more precision and examine alloys and their properties.
We learn the technique of setting a cabochon in a bezel so as to create a ring.

We apply the married metals technique – a decorative technique which gives us the opportunity to practice filing and soldering – in order to make a brooch. We create decorative textures on metals by hammering and work on metal surfaces using various tools to come up with a necklace-pendant. Finally, special attention is given to the finishing and smoothing of jewelry.

3rd cycle

40 hours / March, 27 – June, 20 2024

In the third cycle, we focus on different ways of connecting elements, using both soldering techniques and cold connections. In particular, we get acquainted with various kinds of joints such as screws, rivets, hinges. We learn the most demanding stone setting technique: diamond cut and irregularly shaped stone with edges. Using this technique, someone can make his/her own diamond ring. We create a ring with an angle band, which has a particular formula and measurements in order to make it. Finally, we will use the connection techniques we have learned in order to come up with a necklace.
